And when he was alone, those around him with the twelve asked him about the parables. And he said to them, “To you has been given the secret of the kingdom of God, but for those outside everything is in parables, so that
“‘they may indeed see but not perceive, and may indeed hear but not understand, lest they should turn and be forgiven.’”
Hearing, Seeing, Understanding
As we’ve studied Mark, one of the reoccurring themes is that the disciples do not understand. He’s teaching them in parables, they are traveling toward Jerusalem, and they still don’t get it. We have a couple of stories of blind men who now can see.
There is this challenge that these chapters present: Do we hear? Or do we let it go in one ear and out the other? Are we seeing? Do we understand?
This is a good challenge to consider during the Lenten season.
